Australia Nova Romana (ANR) is the name given to the association in Australia that represents the Nova Roma Oceania chapter and subsidiary in the region. This association is designed to encompass citizens resident in New Zealand also. It is presently designated as an unincorporated association under Australian law. Nova Roma has been here in Australia in various forms since L. Equitio Dec. Iunio cos. ‡ MMDCCLII a.u.c. (1999) but has really started to expand since Q. Arrio (II) T. Domitio (III) cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXIII a.u.c. (2020) with the formalization of the association here in the region. ANR is a member group of the Australasian Living History Federation (ALHF) and is recognized as an authentic living history society. Citizens can apply through ANR for public liability insurance for reenactment purposes.
Nova Roma was established as an international organization on Kal. Mar. ‡ Fl. Vedio M. Cassio cos. ‡ MMDCCLI a.u.c. (March 1, 1998), with the aim of providing Roman themed education through living history and networking with other Roman themed organisations and institutions. Nova Roma is a niche entity but found globally, with most of their members found throughout Eastern Europe, Italy, UK, Australia and heavily through the United States. Nova Roma is an international living history society, a community of scholars, students and enthusiasts who teach and study Roman society through the framework of a symbolic nation based on the ancient Roman Republic. Nova Roma encourages a focus to the study and restoration of ancient Roman culture. Through living history and reenactment, they undertake activities in classical studies and Roman religion. Unlike many other Roman reenactment groups, they do not have a military focus but seek to demonstrate and understand the Mos maiorum (custom of the ancestors) and Romanitas (the Roman way). They are not considered a LARP or Role-Play group, as they take all traditions and customs seriously (with the necessary compromises for modern times), ensuring accuracy in their activities to promote integrity in their Roman identity education.
