There are a few different ways in which you can be a member of Nova Roma Praetorium Australe (NRPA), read below sections for descriptions of each membership category. In addition to each group there are different types of membership available within each group, ranging from different ranks, to different types of membership.

Praetorian Guard

The Praetorian Guard is an elite group of fighting men who guarded the Emperor of Rome, click here for a little history on the Praetorian Guard. An NRPA member of the Praetorian Guard is a person who is one of the following;

Full Member – Officer
A person who is 18 years or older, has paid membership fee’s for the current year, or is a Lifetime member who is exempt from paying membership fee’s, a Full Member Officer is required to obtain the Full Kit and partakes in both combat and civillian reenactments, training and events. Has learned NRPA battle drills and is able to speak basic latin (we teach our members basic latin) This person has been promoted by NRPA to a position of Officer by either time served or based on merit, see ranks. (an officer has full voting rights within the NRPA.)

Full Member – Guard
A person who is 18 years or older, who has paid membership fee’s for the current year or is a Lifetime member who is exempt from paying membership fee’s, this member holds a non officer rank. To be this level of membership you need to achieve rank Tesserarius. At this point you would have your battle kit can partake in full battle exercises, this member has learned NRPA battle drills and can speak basic latin (this member has full voting rights within the NRPA)

Full Member – Trouper
A person who is 18 years or older, who has paid membership fee’s for the current year, a Trouper is covered by two ranks as it allows two levels of participation, at this level your requirement is to either own a basic soft kit (see ranks Miles Gregalis) or full soft kit (see ranks Decanus) This member cannot partake in battle exercises other than training drills, the member is learning battle drills and learning basic latin. (this member has full voting rights within the NRPA)

Full Member – Recruit
A person who is 18 years or older, who has paid membership fee’s for the current year, a Recruit otherwise known as a Trio is on probation, the probationary period requires the new member to attend no less than 4 training sessions as a Trio, at this level no kit is required. 

This member is on probation and will only move up to Trouper when they meet the requirements of a Trouper, if NRPA feel a recruit is not meeting expecations or not someone suited to NRPA this person will not pass probation and have their membership fee returned to them. Command has the right to extend the probation period if the recruit needs more time to meet the requirements to move up to Trouper. (a recruit holds no voting rights within NRPA)

Non Combatant

There are a few membership types available as a non combatant, a non combatant is someone who does not partake in battles or battle drills and training, a non combatant can still engage in other events and training.

 

Full Member – Non Combatant
A person who is 18 years or older, who has paid membership fee’s for the current year, or is a Lifetime member who is exempt from paying membership fee’s. This person is either a female who may attend events dressed in common attire worn by Roman women, this is called a Stola. Or this is a male member who does not wish to partake in battle training and drills, this member can attend events wearing a Toga

A Non Combatant member is deemed to be on probation for a 3 month period, this is designed to ensure the NRPA and the Non Combatant Member are a good fit, should a Non Combatants Member not pass probation their membership fee is returned to them. (A Non Combatant Member has full voting rights within the NRPA once probation has been passed)

Associate Member – 
This is a person who is a non-financial member, they are not required to pay membership fee’s , this person can attend meetings and selected events provided they have the required insurance cover for the event in question, an associate member holds no voting rights within the NRPA.

Junior Member

A person who is under 18 years of age has paid membership fee’s for the current year, a junior member is permitted to wear attire appropriate to the age\sex of the member, males can wear Toga and females can wear Stola

This member cannot partake in combat, they can attend training and train with rudis (wooden sword), they can attend events as deemed appropriate by NRPA Command Coucil, this member can only attend training and events when accompanied by an NRPA Member who is their legal guardian. (a junior member holds no voting rights within the NRPA) 

Associate Member

A associate member can be one of two things:

It can be someone who is a financial non active member, this is a person who may support us financially but not be able or willing to engage with us physically, for example someone who lives interstate, they cannot join us physically but support us financially.

This could be someone who does not wish to be an active member but has appropriate approved by us clothing and wishes to attend the occassional event and join us in our efforts as a living history group.
